Installing KBC ProSteam version 5

Applies to ProSteam 5.6.21 to 5.7.04

For later versions of ProSteam, please go to:

Pre-requisites

  • Full administration rights to install software;
  • Excel 2003 or later, but 32-bit versions only!
  • Information about how the software license is supplied (network, or local, with our without a hardware key);
  • The software CD or downloaded package. For download details, please contact the KBC software helpdesk.

Other things to consider

  • Non-English windows : There are some known problems with non-English versions of Windows, but the work-around is simple. Please see instructions below.
  • Unzipping : Please make sure you un-zip the entire contents of the zip file before running the setups.
  • Multiple versions of Excel : This version of ProSteam will only install properly under the currently active version of Excel. If you want to use multiple versions, please contact the KBC software helpdesk.
  • Some warning messages may appear, the first time you start ProSteam.

Installation

See Installing KBC Energy Software, to determine which type of security and installation you have. This will tell you how to:

  • Launch the installation.
  • Install the licensing first, if appropriate.
  • Start the ProSteam installation.

You should then see the following screen:

Click the ProSteam link to start software installation. The other links provide easy access to documentation and technical support.

Non-English Windows

Non-English versions of Windows may use a different name for the “C:\Program Files” directory. In this case, the ProSteam installation will copy some files to the correct location, but wrongly put others in a newly created directory “C:\Program Files\Common Files\KBC”.

The solution is to move any files in this new directory to the correct “Common Files\KBC” directory, which will be found underneath the correct non-English name for Program Files.

Warnings on First use

You may get some messages, the first time ProSteam is used:

  • If you get the message shown in Start-up Message 1, select the option “I have a security key or software license” and then press OK.
  • If you get the message shown in Start-up Message 2, first determine if you use HASP or Sentinel security and then proceed as follows:
    • If you have Sentinel licensing, just select Cancel, as this message does not apply to you.
    • If you have HASP licensing, follow the instructions in the message box.

The next time ProSteam is used, neither of these messages should appear. Close and re-open ProSteam to check.

Testing an installation

See here for screen shots of how to test if ProSteam is installed and working properly in Excel 2007.

For Excel 2003 the procedure is similar, but the ProSteam menu appears directly within the Excel menu bar.

Troubleshooting

Link error reported - Bad capitalization of xlas
ProSteam contains a number of Excel "xla" files, which are copied to the Excel library directory during installation. In some circumstances, these can end up with bad capitalization. For example, ProSteam.xla is badly named as "PROSTEAM.xla", or LmFuncWiz.xla is badly named as "LMFUNCWIZ.xla". This causes ProSteam to report a link error when opening a workbook.

The work-around is to change the capitalization back to the forms shown in bold above.
