Flow assurance means effectively handling various solid deposits such as gas hydrates, wax deposition, scale, asphaltene and naphthenates. When your stream is interrupted, blocked or squeezed, it can cost your company money in decreased output and possibly in damaged assets.

Flow Assurance Software

KBC offers several Flow Assurance Software models to help with flow assurance:

  • Infochem’s Multiflash software, used with other modelling tools, produces potential cost savings and increased profitability over a range of industries. With the pressure and temperature profiles, the models can predict and help you prevent the appearance of solids in the pipeline. Multiflash provides a fluid characterisation procedure that produces a simplified compositional model of the fluid, taking into account the available experimental measurements in an optimal way. It facilitates hydrate, wax and asphaltene analysis in wells and surface networks.
  • FloWax allows you to model wax deposition in pipelines. Its thermodynamic wax model predicts the WAT and amount of wax that comes out of a solution, while the wax deposition models assess prevention and remediation frequency.
            - FlowWax has four main features:
                    - Thermodynamic wax model
                    - Heat and mass transfer
                    - Shear removal
                    - Fluid flow model
  • The thermodynamic wax module includes the Coutinho model, which represents wax as a solid solution. The model gives good predictions of waxing behavior, both wax appearance temperature and the amount of wax precipitated at different temperatures.
  • The Infochem asphaltene model is based on the RKSA cubic equation of state with additional terms to describe the association of asphaltene molecules and their solvation by resin molecules. The model is compatible with existing engineering approaches that describe vapour-liquid equilibria and represents a computationally efficient way of incorporating complex chemical effects into a cubic equation of state.
  • A PVT analysis spells out the composition of an oil or gas from one of the PVT laboratories, which can be used as input to Multiflash. These reports follow a fairly standard format, and the PVT lab analysis form endeavours to reproduce this to make entering information as easy as possible.

  • Flow Assurance: Flow Assurance can be critical to upstream oil and gas projects and FEESA’s consultants & associates are recognised as amongst the best in the world. FEESA supports operators’ and contractors’ design teams with relevant and understandable flow assurance studies that greatly improve the work-flow of a project.  Because Maximus was built with consultancy in mind, it often takes a central role in our studies; however FEESA consultants can use a range of other tools, such as OLGA for transient simulations, Multiflash for PVT analysis, CFD or bespoke modelling. The range of tools at our disposal allows for fit for purpose solutions, tailored to the problems / time available and, therefore, to the clients’ needs.  Our consultants are highly qualified with the necessary project experience to enable them to take the most appropriate route to efficiently solve a Flow Assurance problem whilst integrating with, and supporting, a range of other engineering disciplines.

  • Field Development Planning: FEESA-FDP is a niche, independent consultancy serving the exploration and production sector of the oil and gas industry. We work in close co-operation with our clients, who have included small, medium and large IOCs, other engineering consultancies and contractors, providers of specialist intelligence to the oil and gas industry and training companies. Our goal is to assist them to achieve an optimum development plan for their hydrocarbon discoveries. Our specialists provide expertise in planning and execution services to support key stages of client’s decision making process.

  •  Benefits of Combining Flow Assurance and Field Development Planning: FEESA consultants have added great benefits to projects by carrying out combined Flow Assurance and Production Forecasting studies using Maximus.  On some projects we are working for the Forecasting group on the project, but in fact most of our Flow Assurance studies include a production profile forecasting element, even if we are not in the main production forecasting team on the project.  As discussed in the following document, such studies generally lead to better surface facilities solutions, be it the investigation of a hi-tech solution (subsea separation and compression) or proving the feasibility of a cheaper conventional solution by the removal of unnecessary design margins.

Wax Deposition Modelling | FloWax

FloWax is a powerful multiphase pipeline simulator with wax deposition modelling capabilities for flow assurance and production applications.

Through the unique blend of Multiflash’ advanced wax thermodynamics and a robust implementation of multiphase flows model in pipeline, FloWax allows Flow Assurance and Production engineers to predict the evolution profiles of:

  • the thickness and the physical properties of wax sediments along the pipeline
  • pressure and temperature of the bulk fluid
  • the physical properties (density, speed, molecular weight, viscosity, holdup ) of the gas, hydrocarbon liquid and aqueous phase

Based on the predicted wax thickness profiles and the criteria required for wax management in production pipelines, the pigging frequency can easily be evaluated.

The built-in pipeline design tool allows including in the model, the pipelines’ geometry, building material, presence of thermal insulation as well the environment in which the pipeline is set. Temperature and Pressure profile from third parties simulators such as Olga can also be imported and matched.

FloWax embeds Multiflash thermodynamic modelling and petroleum fluid characterisation capabilities, however, model files generated with Multiflash standalone can also be used to model the fluid and solve flash calculations.

The multiphase flow model takes into account for different flow regimes as well as the heat transfer between the pipeline and the environment and models the deposition of wax along the pipeline walls, based on mass transfer method.  The shear removal model developed with large flow-loop experimental data can also be included for highly turbulent regimes.

In FloWax the effect of entrained solid waxes on oil rheology is also taken into account to provide reliable predictions on oil viscosity. The model can handle the coexistence of wax sediment, hydrocarbon liquid, aqueous phase and gas. However, the number of phases actually present along the pipeline is determined by the full solution of the phase equilibrium calculation with the built-in Multiflash engine.
